History of the Departmnet

Medical psychology first appeared in the curriculum in the school year 1963/64 as a separate subject called Care of the Sick and Medical Psychology. It is taught in the second and third years of general medicine and is provided by the Psychiatric Clinic. Until then, since the founding of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University in 1919, the topics of medical psychology have been taught implicitly within psychiatry and probably also within other clinical disciplines. The subject was taught at the Psychiatric Clinic until 2005, when a separate theoretical department, the Institute of Psychology and Psychosomatics, was established, which is the only one of its kind in the Czech Republic.

As of 1 January 2023, the name of the department was supplemented with the word medical, i.e. the Institute of Medical Psychology and Psychosomatics of the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University.
